KursbeschreibungWritten by one of the leading practitioners in the field of comparative political analysis as well as an author of well received monographs and textbooks in the field the present course seeks to introduce students into the theory and methods of comparative analysis in the social sciences in general and political science in particular. Since no German equivalent is on the market and Prof. Peters was willing to write this introduction particularly for students of the FernUniversität the choice of English as the language of publication seemed the right way to go. For students this means that good English reading skills are required (to train these, course no. 03660 Englischsprachige Texte in den Sozialwissenschaften is recommended) - and can be trained while studying this course. The language is both the colloquial English of a native author and also includes some technical social science vocabulary. Hence, a larger amount of time is attributed to studying this course (4 SWS) as would be justified by the - rather slim - course. The substance of the course, however, should be readily accessible, since the author does not delve into technical details of e.g. statistical analysis. Rather, the approach is - very Anglo-Saxon in that - to built the logic of comparative research on the basis of common sense, increasingly enriched by social science methodical reflections. Students having studied the course will no longer naively compare, but will make a methodically conscious choice of the objects and aspects of comparison. The course is part of a module in the "Politics and Organization"-BA-programme. |
