The main objective of this course is to learn to use and understand the various services of the Internet and related communication networks. The functionality of the important Internet Services such as World Wide Web, newsgroups, e-mail and chat is explained. The underlying procedures and protocols (IP, TCP, UDP,...) on which the applications rely are outlined. In this context, different infrastructures of communication networks (Modem, ISDN, xDSL, ...) are also considered. Additionally, the various data formats employed in the mentionned applications and their typical characteristics are presented. How to use the internet services for recherche, information and communication is explained. The course closes with an outlook on future developments in the internet.

The content of this course was prepared under the participation of Mr. Dipl.-Ing. Gerd Steinkamp, Mr. Dipl.-Inform. Thomas Demuth, Mrs. Dipl.-Ing. Dagmar Sommer, and Mr. Dipl.-Ing. Michael Stepping.
